School Closings
School Closings
In the Poplar Bluff School District, we want families to stay informed and prepared when school is not in session. There are a few different types of school closings throughout the year:
- Scheduled Closings include planned days off such as holidays and full-day professional development and collaboration days for staff. These are listed on our school calendar in advance.
- Unscheduled Closings happen when unexpected events — like severe weather or emergency situations — require us to cancel classes with little notice.
- AMI Days (Alternative Methods of Instruction) are used when school is closed due to hazardous weather, but learning continues from home. Rather than taking a traditional snow day, students complete assignments provided by their teachers — either online through Google Classroom or through take-home packets if internet access is limited. AMI Days help reduce disruptions to the school calendar and avoid extending the school year. The district will communicate AMI Days as early as possible through the district website, ParentSquare, social media, and local news.
How AMI Days Work
On an AMI Day, students are expected to complete their assigned learning activities and submit them according to their teacher's instructions. Online assignments may be submitted electronically during the AMI school day; paper-based assignments should be turned in the first day back to school. AMI work is graded — if assignments are not submitted, the student may be marked absent for that day. Teachers will be available during specific hours to answer questions and offer support.
For questions about specific AMI assignments, contact your child's classroom teacher. For general questions, reach out to your school office.
We encourage all families to stay up to date through our school calendar, ParentSquare alerts, and local media for the latest information on school closures.
Community Group
School Closings
Community members who are not parents or guardians of currently enrolled students — such as grandparents, childcare providers, or local businesses — can join our School Closings Community Group to receive closing announcements and updates. Parents and guardians of enrolled students do not need to join, as notifications are sent automatically to your registered ParentSquare account.
