Achieving Excellence Through Learning: Every Child, Every Hour, Every Day

About the Board

Meet Our School Board

Our Board of Education is a representative body, elected by registered voters here in the Poplar Bluff R-I School District of Butler County. Their job is to provide general supervision of our schools – making sure the district is run the way state statute, the Missouri State Board of Education, and our own district policies require.

The Board answers to the community that elects it. That means staying responsive to what our students need academically while working within the district's financial realities – balancing both is part of the job. Every decision comes back to supporting our students, reflecting our community, and following Missouri law.

What the Board Does

The Board is the policy-making body for the district. It sets the direction and holds the district accountable. Here's what that work looks like:

  • Setting policy and direction. The Board writes the policies and procedures that guide how the district operates, sets the goals we work toward, and determines the funding needed to reach them.
  • Hiring and overseeing the Superintendent. The Board appoints the Superintendent as the district's chief executive, then holds them accountable for running day-to-day operations and carrying out Board policy.
  • Evaluating how we're doing. The Board regularly reviews district programs and how well policies are working, using data and reports from the Superintendent.
  • Adopting the budget. Each year the Board passes a budget that funds staffing, facilities, instructional materials, and technology.
  • Overseeing staffing. From hiring teachers and support staff to approving salary schedules, the Board helps build and maintain a strong workforce — and makes sure performance is reviewed regularly.
  • Engaging the community. The Board keeps families and community members informed, listens to public input, and makes sure students, parents, and staff have a voice in decisions.
  • Planning for the future. By setting clear educational goals, the Board guides district leadership in improving academic programs and keeping our schools aligned with state standards.
  • Handling appeals fairly. When there are concerns about how a policy was applied, the Board serves as a court of appeal for students, staff, and community members.

Operating as a Whole

Every board member brings their own perspective, but the Board can only act as a unified body. Authority rests with the Board as a whole — not with any individual member.

The Board works within Missouri law and uses its judgment to serve the district well. Our commitment is to a student-centered school system that's transparent, accountable, and responsive to the community we serve.
