May 2026 Athletes of the Month

The Mules Booster Club has named Lexi Ash and Kinyon Johnson of Poplar Bluff High School the Athletes of the Month for May, presented by Academy Sports + Outdoors.
Kinyon, a senior track and field runner, has broken the 24-year-old school record in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.60. This season, he had first place finishes in the 100-meter at the SEMO North Open, Festus McCullough-Douglass Invitational and the Eureka Wildcat Classic; first place finishes in the 200-meter at the SEMO North Open, and the Jackson Bob Sink and Fred Lyon invitationals; and a first place finish in the 4x100 relay at the Poplar Bluff Invite.
“Kinyon joined the track team last year not really knowing what he was capable of. After just a few practices, it was clear he had some serious speed and a lot of potential. He put together a strong first season before an unfortunate injury cut things short right before sectionals,” said Jeff Mannon, his coach. “Since then, Kinyon has put in quality work during the offseason and has carried that momentum into this year. He’s continued to improve, and right now we’re focused on having him peak at the right time as we head into the state series over the next few weeks.”
Lexi, a junior track and field runner, placed first at the Notre Dame Frozen, SEMO and Dexter open, and the Jackson, Desoto and Poplar Bluff invites in shot put, while taking home second at the SEMO North conference in shot put as well as second overall. She was ranked second in district and sixth in sectionals for shot put, respectively.
“Lexi has been an outstanding leader and competitor for PBHS through her dedication, work ethic and passion for throwing. She consistently pushes herself to improve every day,” said Beth Lewis, her coach. “Lexi leads by example, encouraging her teammates, and bringing energy and focus to every practice and competition. Her commitment to the sport and willingness to put in the hard work have made her not only a talented thrower, but also a respected leader within the program.”
